Speaking after the match, Potter expressed disappointment with the team's performance, particularly in the second half. He noted that they had started the match well, but their performance declined in the second half.
"We started a bit slow in the second half, and from out of nowhere, a goal goes in and it becomes difficult," Potter said. "It was a game where probably the first goal, especially here with the environment, was going to be challenging for us. But we tried to push."
However, Potter believed that their attempts to push forward led to their downfall. They conceded a second goal due to a mistake, which led to a cheap set-piece. He also pointed out that his team did not do the basics well enough in the second phase of the game.
"We haven’t done the basics well enough - it’s as simple as that, and we have to improve that," Potter said.
Potter also acknowledged that Sunderland's first goal was not due to any exceptional play, but rather a ball in the box that his team should have dealt with better.
"In these environments, you’re never comfortable. You’re never safe, and we didn’t do enough at the start of the second half," Potter said. "Even though it was stop-start, we didn’t do enough, and there wasn’t too much to like about that second half from our perspective."
